NYFW Autumn/Winter 2010. Suits.

A trend that was rife on the New York catwalks this season was the suit. Everyone had a new take on it, and noone more so than Alexander Wang whose collection was primarily made up of sexily deconstructed pinstriped numbers. His collection felt like a throwback to the 90s, maybe it was something to do with all the pinstripes and the grunge hair.

All the big girls walked for him (Natalia Vodianova, Freja Beha Erichsen, Natasha Poly, Karlie Kloss, Sasha Pivovorova, Agyness Deyn, Magdelena Frackowiak, Anja Rubik, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Anna Selezneva, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Iselin Steiro etc - trust me you'd recognise every last one of them) which made for an amazing show as always; he really is the It-designer everyone wants to walk for. Natalia Vodianova's appearance on Jonathan Ross last week proved that it pays off to walk for Wang as she appeared wearing the boots she wore in the show, presumably a gift from the designer, which don't hit shops until at least 6 months from now! Jealous.

I was a little bit disappointed in this collection, Alexander Wang is one of my absolute favourite contemporary designers and I always expect something cool and edgy from him. There is no doubt that he did breathe new life into the suit, arguably managing to make it fresh and sexy - and I understand that this is one of the key trends to look to next season - but honestly I would never wear a suit so a collection compromised almost wholly of suits seems a little uninteresting. However, I do love his very minimal use of colour which has been somewhat of a theme throughout his career - the colours he does go for are unusual and intriguing (mustards and maroons), and only subtly hinted at.

(this is by far my favourite one from Alexander Wang)

Other fun suits that caught my eye were:

(All 3 looks are AMAZING! Arguably my favourite take on the suit, very sexy and edgy. Love the skinny leather ties, the playfulness of the sheer fabric, skyscraper ankleboots, a tiny belted waist, thigh high hemlines juxtaposed with high necklines, sheer hold ups - perfect.)

Diane von Furstenburg

(love this beige belted look)
Donna Karan New York

While others opted for a more classic approach:
(love love love this look, very Chanel-inspired)
Monique Lhullier

Michael Kors
Tommy Hilfiger

Ralph Lauren

Marc Jacobs

Yigal Azrouel

Suits promise to be a big trend for Autumn/Winter 2010 so be sure to take note. Following on from New York, plenty have already been seen in London and I bet there are many more to come in Paris - Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel alone are incredibly famous for them so I'm really excited to see what the French capital has to offer.

NYFW Autumn/Winter 2010. Eveningwear.

I'm not normally one for eveningwear as I have little occasion to wear it and I prefer a more casual look but there were some beautiful dresses on the New York catwalks that I just had to mention. If I had to wear a ballgown for some reason, I hope it would be one of these. Perhaps we will be seeing some of these beautiful creations on the red carpet soon.

NYFW Autumn/Winter 2010. Daywear.

A few of my favourite picks from New York Fashion Week.

These looks are arguably more casual but I love that they could be dressed up and take you from day to night. These are all things I would love to wear. Mainly I like a look that has very little colour - black, whites and different shades of grey are my idea of heaven and they're always classic - but when there is colour I like it to be an incredibly vibrant injection that you might not traditionally consider, such as the bright orange and pink hues seen at Charlotte Ronson. I love extremes, I'm really feeling for minidresses and maxidresses - nothing inbetween. Skinny leather trousers and top-heavy looks (oversized mannish coats, jackets and knits) are also personal favourites. Other trends from the Autumn/Winter 2010 Ready-to-Wear collections that I absolutely love include sheer layering and the belted look (belts over coats, yum).

(love this look, always a fan of sheer hold ups and skyscraper ankleboots, desperate for a duffle coat)

(really want this jumper! )

(this dress is perfection and could easily take you from day to night - longsleeves and high neck with a hint of sheer, teamed with a shorter than short hemline, sheer holdups and skyscraper ankleboots, love it!)

Proenza Schouler
(Without a doubt my favourite collection from New York this season, so much to like - skyscraper ankleboots, sheer hold ups, thigh highs hemlines juxtaposed with high necklines, sheer fabric, tiny belted waists, high waistlines under longsleeved cropped tops, skinny trousers, patterned knitwear, leather, largely colourless but with a few injections of vibrant colour here and there etc. The whole collection was just absolutely amazing.)
